On January 1st, Virginia, Joe and I set out to cycle across Cuba using mainly off-pavement tracks. Our journey began in the eastern coastal city of Santiago de Cuba and carried us over three mountain ranges starting with the Sierra Maestra. Over the course of three weeks we cycled through seemingly infinite farming communities, two more mountain ranges, coastal fishing villages, and into the far west limestone karst menagerie of the Valle de Viñales. Overall we discovered a beautiful time-locked country that’s full of warm people, quirky eccentricities, natural beauty, and history that’s always at the surface.

The name of this route — ‘La Ruta Mala’, or ‘the bad way’ — came pretty easily, but its meaning is also multifaceted. Joe Cruz and I designed it by poring over satellite imagery, a couple of paper maps, and blogs and trip reports by other bike tourists. The majority of the reports floating around made it seem like tarmac roads were going to keep us from our dream of putting together a mostly dirt route across the country. But after starting the route, we quickly realized that was not going to be the case. In fact, many of the tracks we found in our research turned out to be even more rugged and challenging that we expected, and some of the rougher horse tracks likely haven’t even seen bicycles, much less cars. There were many incidents where locals flagged us down shouting that we were going the wrong way, or the bad way, and they insisted on giving us directions to a main road. We smiled and told them that we prefer the bad way.

Cuba is wonderful and complex, a place where one’s own mixed emotions and presuppositions rise to the fore. On the one hand its communist socialist government has resulted in a country with astonishingly little economic inequality, a cohesive society, and an incredible record of environmental sustainability. On the other hand, the long Castro regime has a verifiable record of human rights abuses and has kept Cubans comparatively impoverished. Globally speaking, for some Fidel was a revolutionary hero while for others he was a brutal dictator.

As noted, this route is both mentally and physically challenging. But it also proved to be an incredible means of seeing a side of Cuba that isn’t accessible via the typical tourist agenda.   • US Citizens: Several US cities now offer direct flights. However, it is still impermissible for US citizens to travel to Cuba merely as ‘tourists’. The US State Department requires a signed affidavit on which you have to check one of a dozen reasons for visiting. Among others these include ‘Humanitarian Purposes’, ‘Exportation’, ‘Journalistic Activity’, or the vague ‘Support for The Cuban People’.  All of this paperwork is filled out through your airline on-line (JetBlue) or at the airport (American Airlines). There is also a fee for the Visa—arranged at the time of check in—which includes health insurance while you are in the country. Visa prices vary from $50-$100, depending on the third-party service your airline is using.
  • There are two types of currency in Cuba. The newer ‘Peso Convertible’ (CUC), which is basically ‘tourist money’, essentially exchanges at a ratio of 1:1 with the USD. This is used in bigger cities and at Casas Particulares. Then there’s the Peso NM (National Money) which exchanges at about 24:1 USD. This is used most everywhere else and is quite amazing. We went to cafeterias where we spent around 60 NM for a meal for three of us! You can find ice cream for 5 NM per scoop in most towns and pizza for 12. The closer you get to Havana the more prevalent the Convertible is. We typically carried both currencies with us. Do not expect Cubans in rural areas to be able to provide change for the Peso Convertibles, unless you’re using the smallest of bills.
  • Bring Euros or CAD to exchange. USDs incur about a 30% fee! The best places to exchange currency are at the Cadecas, ask around and you’ll be directed to one. In touristy areas there are often lines, sometimes really long lines. If you arrive at the Cadeca soon after it closes or even sometimes during operating hours, you may find individuals selling currency for market rate. Though of dubious legality, we used this several times without a problem.
  • Getting to the start of the ride. This route runs east to west due to prevailing winds. It begins in Santiago de Cuba, so you will have to get there from whatever city you fly into. Holguin is the closest airport serviced by US flights, so in principle one could fly into Holguin and fly out of Havana. Viazul bus ( is the most common way for tourists to travel long distances within country, and we have heard that there is usually no problem bringing a bicycle in the cargo area. Bus seats sell quickly and are often sold out weeks in advance during high season, so make your arrangements as soon as you know your dates. Three alternatives to Viazul are arranging transport with a private bus tour company through your hotel in Havana, taking a domestic flight, or taking the train (which we were told is very unpleasant and runs very infrequently, but it might add to the adventure Finally, there is always the possibility of hiring private taxi transport for just you and your crew. We did this because we arrived right before New Years, the busiest tourist season and we found no other options. It is not recommended, as it is expensive and the drive from Havana is long and uncomfortable.
  • Don’t let the photos fool you, this is not an easy stroll on the beach. There are days of endless jarring dirt and rock roads and countless hike-a-bikes in the mountains. Bring big tires—plus size is not necessary, but we think a drop bar bike with 2.0 is about right. You will absolutely struggle and there will be days that will be no fun at all if you bring a standard cyclocross bike. If you must choose between a traditional cross bike and hardtail 29er, bring the 29er.
  • The best time to cycle in Cuba is between December (after Hurricane season) and May. We found Cuba’s January temperatures, even in the mountains, to range from comfortable to downright hot. We rode every day in shorts and short sleeves. There were at most one or two nights when we wore our sweaters.
  • Internet is kind of tricky. There is no such thing as a SIM card for data. The best option is to buy ETECSA scratch-off wifi code cards at ETECSA offices. These usually cost $1-2 per hour. Wifi signals can be found in medium to large sized town squares. Look for groups of teens hunkered down around glowing smartphone screens and that’s the wifi hotspot. We recommend buying a lot if you wish to use the internet regularly. Sometimes lines to buy the cards can be long and very time-consuming. Plus, once you buy these cards, you can use them anywhere throughout the country where there’s an ETECSA wifi hotspot.
  • ZIKA is present. We didn’t get it but know two others who did in the same span of time. There are a lot of mosquitos and other biting insects in Cuba. We recommend bringing a few ‘Ben’s’ wipes.
  • If there is anything you think you might need, bring it. There’s not much in the way of stores in Cuba.
  • The northern beaches are better for snorkeling and diving than their southern counterparts, but they are also more touristed.
  • If you don’t know Spanish, make sure you bring a translation app or phrasebook.
  • Cuba is full of acacia, and many other prickly plants. Without a doubt, go tubeless. Gin and I did, we had zero flats. Joe did not and he had countless flats, to the point where he maxed out his spares and patch kit.
  • Casas Particulares and Hotels are the only available tourist lodging. Casas Particulares are tourist designated home stays that are much more pleasant than they sound. Rooms are private and locking with a private bathroom. Meals are typically optional. And, they are a great way of meeting wonderful hosts. That said, we camped more nights than we stayed in Casas. Casas are generally somewhat pricey (for dirtbag budget bikepackers) ranging from $20-50 for the budget/modest variety. Breakfasts are always $5.
  • There are no real campgrounds, other than one in El Nicho (on map).
  • Camping usually involves that of the ‘stealth’ variety, or camping on folks’ farms. We often were invited to stay in people’s houses, though in those cases we usually elected to sleep in our tents on their land so as not to be too much of a nuisance. Folks usually insisted on feeding us and it made for some of the most wonderful experiences of our trip. There were also occasions when we stopped and asked and were directed to a suitable camp stop like a town gazebo or a baseball field.
  • Lodging in Havana can be tight. It’s best to reserve in advance. Try our host, Gladys, who speaks some English. She has several properties in the old town: or her mobile phone +53 53549323
  • There are several ways to get food in rural Cuba: 1. Cafeterias. These government run restaurants usually have a menu of two or three items and they are extremely inexpensive; 2. Street vendors. We found several small booths that sold pizza or sandwiches directly from the window; 3. Listen for calls of bicycle vendors selling fruit, pasteles, and other treats; 4. Small markets. In medium size towns there are several chains that are somewhat similar to a convenience store, but the options are very limited. 4. Casas Particulares. Typically Casas offer all meals. Breakfast is always 5 CUC and usually is a nice buffet of fruits, eggs and juices.
  • We don’t have much intel on stove fuel. Likely a multi-fuel stove is your best option if you insist on cooking. But, keep in mind there aren’t many options for ‘groceries’, Cafeterias are your best bet for affordable food. However, you will get what they have… Egg sandwiches are common, as are ‘salchichas’ (hot dogs).
  • Outside of major cities, we mostly filtered our water with either a steripen or pump filter out of an abundance of caution. Still, when we were served water in homes or in cafeterias we would occasionally just risk drinking it. Other times we used the steripen on the pitcher or glasses and apologized for our delicate stomachs. The SteriPen definitely proved to be invaluable on this trip.
  • For picky eaters, or folks with diet restrictions, Cuba will be tough. We recommend bringing a load of Lara bars or whatever your preference.
  • A few recommended delicacies: Roasted pork (Cuba’s specialty); Guanábana (in English, soursop) the most amazing fruit on the planet… think coconut mixed with pineapple and pear; Fried green bananas; Cuban coffee… strong, sweet, delicious; Mojitos, even if you don’t care for a mojito, they are pretty good here.

In Viñales, it may seem ambiguous as to whether you can ride bikes on the red dirt single track that make up the “park.” You can—some tourists rent bikes just for this purpose—and no one will hassle you.

For those interested in a shorter version, we might recommend the section between Sancti Spiritus and Viñales. Also, if you are into the remotest of places, you might consider a loop around the far east portion of the island.

As with many of the routes on, we’d like to leave this one open-ended and open source. Should you choose to ride this route and find potentially better or additional options, please let us know. For example, while the beginning and end are logistically ideal for transportation, this route could technically be extended from the tip to tip of the island. Also, there are a couple sections that may have better options.

    Would the trip be do-able towing a trailer full of sport climbing gear? I would really love to do a bikepacking trip and a climbing trip through Cuba; and I’d love to combine them both!

  • I wouldn’t recommend it. There are some super steep pushes that would be rough hauling all that gear. Anything’s possible though.

  • The Cutthroat was great. I am impressed with that bike as it can do a lot more than I thought it could! At times a plus bike or suspension fork would’ve been nice, but the CT set up tubeless with 2.1″ tires was pretty spot on… and super fast on the flat stuff.

  • Oh, and in terms of ‘go-to’ … I guess I don’t really have one at the moment as I’ve been demoing a lot of different bikes for review and such. I really liked the Cutthroat though. Also, I am testing the new Deadwood Sus right now… really sweet, although full-suspension is too much for a trip like this.

Did you ever at any point do the more traditional “bike touring” i.e. 4 panniers a touring model (Kona Sutra, LHT etc.) or is your background more MTB based and so the transition was just natural for you.

    Mind talking a little more about the food situation. Was there always enough food for you guys along the route? Did you eat 100% of your food “out”?

  • Hi Jamie. The Fargo would have been great too. My background was on a MTB, but I did try a 4 pannier setup at first, although on a Surly Troll. Remembering the awkward ride quality, cumbersome baggage, and unnecessary weight of racks and too much stuff, I’ll never look back. I recall preparing for that particular tour… I had to grab extra things last minute just to fill out the four panniers. Not a good sign.

  • We did eat mostly out at ‘cafeterias’, which, as mentioned under the Food/H2O tab above, were extremely inexpensive. We also carried a couple dehydrated meals from home for emergency situations. We probably didn’t need them though.

    If I can add to Logan’s remarks: My take is that finding food was a mix of straightforward and easy and then sometimes perplexing. Our explicit plan was not to carry very much food at all. That kept us fast and light, and (at least in the way that I thought about it) it forced us to *be* in Cuba in a better way than if we took ourselves out of potential social situations by just stopping to camp and firing up a couple of stoves.

    A typical day would have us waking up and setting off without having eaten. We’d soon enough get to a town where, by asking around, we could usually find a tiny hole in the wall type operation selling an egg sandwich and juice, and that was our breakfast. Around lunch we’d be hoping to pass through a big enough town—and most of the time this wasn’t a problem—to find a cafeteria serving rice, beans, and yucca. We’d wash it down with a beer and continue on. And then for dinner it was usually the same thing, sometimes with pork or chicken for the meat eaters. From there we’d either head onward for a few more kilometers to camp or ask around for a place to camp in town. Basically every time we asked, there was some option either at a home or in a ball field or other kind of municipal space. And as I expect is obvious from Logan’s story on this site, these times led to the most memorable and striking conversations and times spent with Cubans.

    The nights we stayed in casas particulares tended to be in cities or very touristed places, so we just went out to dinner at a restaurant. We’d purchase breakfast the next morning at the house.

    Did we ever go hungry? For sure. There were days when we started with empty stomaches and then found several towns in a row with no cafeteria so that it could be after noon with no eating. (One day we just hung out in one of those towns anyway playing dominos and drinking rum and beer.) But it was never dire or serious, far far from it. We just rolled with it.

    Hope that paints a sensible picture of our experience: If I were to go back, I’d do it exactly the same way and not carry food. Again, I saw taking meals as an important time for us in our travels.

    I have been getting conflicting reports of bringing bikes into Cuba. Frontier airlines says they don’t allow passengers to brings bikes because the Cuban Government doest allow them through customs. A friend of a friend got their bike confiscated at Cuban customs, reasons unknown to me. Other US airline companies seem to allow them as cargo. You, among other online accounts, seem to have gotten bikes in just fine. Mind giving any insight here, any barriers, etc. Thanks for this and your previous very informative reply!

  • Chris, hm, that’s strange. I’ve never heard such a report. The four of us had no problems whatsoever flying with our bicycles. Daniel and I were on JetBlue and Logan and Virginia were on American. JetBlue did have an annoying rule that bikes could not be transported in cardboard boxes, but they are otherwise carried as a checked bag (mine was in a hardcase, Daniel’s was in a softcase). Plus we know of at least one other pair of cyclist who visited around the same time as we did, and they didn’t report any issue.

I already bought tickets for me, my wife and my two sons for going to Cuba next june for 30 days with my new Surly LHT. This will be our first bike trip as family and the first one of my wife, so I am trying to figure out the sections of the route that are single track in order to avoid them and find another way. Can you point me which ones are?

  • Hi Pedro. Oh wow, that’s great. I would however, not particularly recommend this route as a family trip, especially for first-timers. It’s pretty rough riding, especially the mountain sections. The LHT is more road equipped, and fortunately, in Cuba, there aren’t as many cars on the roads as elsewhere. That said, you may want to stick to more of the backroads. Even the off tarmac double track roads can get pretty gnarly at times. But, then again, not knowing your background, it’s hard for me to gauge…

    Hi Logan, and Pedro. I was just about to ask a similar question. I am an experienced cyclist – road, MTB and gravel – though an inexperienced bike packer. My girlfriend turns 40 this year and she loves cycling but cycles far too infrequently for her liking due to silly Spanish office hours. Hence her experience on the bike is weekends only in the wine region of Barcelona where we live. We wanted to do Cuba by bike, or some of it, but clearly your route would be too much for her (maybe for me also, but I would love to try). In addition to Pedro’s question, could I add to the mix, is there a particular section of the whole route you could recommend for easier riding? Or even a location to maybe do several mini adventures out of one, or two, locations instead of a full traverse. Mixed terrain is fine, just not gnarly stuff. If successful, this will be the first of many for us. Some of the routes in Spain look superb and are on the list. Thanks for the resource and stories!

  • It’s really hard to say without knowing you or your girlfriend’s tolerances or abilities. But I would say the parts in Vinales/Pinar Del Rio are the best bet; perhaps from Vinales to Candaleria. Thanks!!

  • I would say the parts around Vinales are fairly doable. The roads are less steep there. Just pay close attention to the spikes in altitude on the map below. Those are the sections where the route gets rough.

    Thanks again for your wonderful travelreports, me and my friend are booked on a plane to Cuba for 2,5 weeks in December and will use about the last 2/3’rds of your route as a guideline.
    I was just wondering about the puncture warning….
    I only recently bought a bike with Crest no tubes rims and it came with WTB Riddler 29″ TCS Light Fast Rolling, 2.25. A brand I have no experience with yet and no real experience with running tubeless yet.
    On my previous bike I had gotten used to Schwalbe Marathon Plus MTB version, which is a heavy tyre but been puncture free since, but never been in Acacia teritory and these tyres do not setup tubeless.
    Which option would you advise, WTB riddlers setup tubeless with plenty of sealant or the Schwalbe marathon Plus anti-puncture tyres with tubes?

  • Thanks Rose. Awesome, so you’ll ride from Camaguey, I presume? I would personally go with the Riddlers and tubeless, but it really depends on how comfortable you are with repairing tubeless. Look into getting a Dynaplug repair tool … they work really well. Also, check out the section on tire repair in our bikepacking repair kit:

  • Whoops, sorry I missed this. Customs was almost non-existent on the Cuba side, to be honest. This may have changed since then , but we didn’t have a problem, at all.

  • Hmm. It’s really going to be hard to do in that short time frame. you could consider a bus to Vinales and then ride part of the way back to Havana along the route. However, without knowing your abilities, it would be hard to recommend…

  • We (Hana Black and I) just rode the route in first three weeks of Dec 2017, sticking to it about 80-90%. A couple of notes for others heading out on the route this season:

    – We ran into unrideable mud pretty early in the ride (from day 2) and had to make a couple of detours. I’m not sure if it is especially wet this year, or if this may be a problem other years, but it’s worth noting. The section after Matias and the section after Macanacon both required a backtrack and detour which we planned easily enough with OSM (via OsmAnd). I note that the OSM maps for Cuba are excellent – way way better than Google Maps (offline) and definitely recommended.

    – We also met two other cyclists riding from Camaguey to Playa Larga along the route and they reported taking all day to cross 5km of ‘swamp’ between San Antonia and La Alina (we had detoured here preemptively guessing it might be wet).

    – The section between Manzanillo and Rio Cauto (during day 3 for us) has a collapsed bridge across a small canal and consequently no local traffic so has become overgrown with thorn bushes. This is the section that starts after you leave the pavement for the last time before Rio Cauto. Bridge is at Lat 20.46391 Lon -76.94320. The canal is probably crossable if the water is low, but wading there long is not recommended due to crocodiles. We also got frightened away by a snake coiled on the bridge remains (we’re Kiwis). The opposite bank is simply a wall of thorns so you’d need a machete to progress here. We backtracked a bit and followed a track (also unfortunately overgrown) to the highway which can be taken direct to Rio Cauto. For now, stick to the highway on this section.

    Cuba’s an incredible place to ride – don’t hesitate, but take an open mind. The comment in Logan’s article regarding ‘Mentally Perplexing’ is very true but this challenge provides the most rewarding of touring/travel experiences.

    We had zero trouble with the bikes (in cardboard boxes) as oversize luggage on Avianca from Central America in December 17. We went to the items to declare queue in arrivals but were waved past and straight out the door – Welcome to Cuba!

    Howdy all. I spent most of last month (April 2018) in Cuba. My initial plan was to ride this incredible route the whole way, but it didn’t end up working out for me, as I’ll explain here.

    On the second day of my ride, coming down out of the mountains (perhaps 10 miles out of Guisa), I started to look for a spot to camp. It was late afternoon. I ended up getting an offer from an incredible family in a small village to sleep in their yard. I was invited to the neighbors house (a local english teacher) for dinner. When her husband came home, things went downhill. He was a government official, and was not happy about my being there. He took my passport information, and called immigration officials in Bayamo or Guisa. He then said I had to go meet officials in Guisa, as I could not stay the night up in the mountains.

    I ended up answering hours of questions from local police well past midnight, and the following morning. A local english tutor, who has become a friend, translated for me. It seems the Sierra Maestra mountains are banned to foreigners without a guide and explicit police permission. I was told not to stray into any other mountains as well, and not to camp (my tent was clearly visible on the front of my bike). As a dual citizen (US/NZ) I hid my US passport, which my english teacher friend later confirmed was a good idea.

    From there, I ended up improvising the rest of my route through Cuba, combining La Routa Mala, paved roads, and my own back road exploring. I spent most nights in Casa’s (!!!!if you book through AirB’n’B the cost is about 1/2 as much, $13 per night!!!!), though I did camp in the Bay of Pigs. Instead of riding the Escambray mountains, I detoured down through Trinidad, and rode along the coast. I found some fun sections of dirt before Cienfuegos, so let me know if you decide to ride this. From Playa Larga, I rode up to the north coast, finding some fun riding in the Matanzas area. I then rode through Havana, and rejoined the route for the last days of my trip. I rode down through Las Terraces on my way to Soroa from Havana, which I really recommend if you’re coming from Havana.

    All in all, I loved my time in Cuba. It is a wildly unique place, with incredibly kind people and very interesting history. As a solo traveler who only know a few words of Spanish, I was definitely not well positioned to negotiate more delicate situations surrounding camping and traveling through mountains. Perhaps a traveler who speaks the language would have been able to avoid my brush with the law. Detouring around the mountains from Matias to Guisa could be another strategy, and would cut out some hike-a-bike toil.

    Also, on tyres: A New Zealand airport took the glue from my patch kit and my spare sealant (in my checked bag) because it’s explosive(?). Also, all the air was let out of my tyres between Mexico and Cuba, which lost most of my sealant. So I basically had no tyre repair from day 1, and this route is VERY hard on tyres (I counted 5 inch-long thorns in my front tyre, which still held air tubeless). My rear tube/tyre, which I couldn’t reseat tubeless, ended up being held together by gorilla tape and zip ties until an awesome Havana bike rental outfit called Rutabikes lent me glue for my patch kit. So bring more spares than you think you’ll need. You can make a cuban’s day by leaving an extra tube or two behind when you leave. Also bring a presta to schrader adaptor so you can use local air compressors for tubeless repairs.

    One more note: The road is no longer washed out just before Santi Spiritus, and so there is no longer a need to cross over the dam.

    Hey, finally we made the trip to Cuba. As you recommended we avoid most of the off road parts though the mountains, it was so great.

    Now we are going to Ecuador, my family again, and we will do the trans-ecuador (the dirt one).
