Post-ride Beer: La Bicicleta

During my 6 months in Africa, I went through about 7 levels of hop withdrawal…

In South Africa I came across a couple of OK beers, but most of it was of the typical mass-produced variety. I was softened to the point of even turning to hard cider a couple of times. The most drinkable beer I found in east Africa was the Zambian Mosi lager which had a little character to it. I tried a ‘shake-shake’ beer in Zimbabwe and found it to be similar to a flat, semi-rancid smoothy. Somewhere in Malawi I entered a vacuum of beerless purgatory where I all but forgot the taste of quality brew. It wasn’t until we reached Cordoba Spain where I was rescued from the depths of deprevity and my tastebuds reawakened by resiny hops and smooth bubbly grassiness.

We were walking through an interesting neighborhood in central Cordoba where we passed an inviting bar called La Bicicleta. A small sign on the door read, ‘HI HIPSTERS!!’ We’re not cool by any means, but between my beard and Gin’s tattoo, we figured someone might serve us. La Bicicleta turned out to be a fantastically comfortable little spot with great tapas, very well done bike-themed decor, and a couple of amazing beers on the menu.

I was pretty excited to read the word pale on a beer label, but was even more excited when I saw the Son Nara pour a hazy gold that I hadn’t laid eyes on in 4,224 hours and 17 minutes. To avoid the trappings of a common beer review, all I will say is that the Nara is a wonderfully grassy and smooth American style pale ale that hits the spot. If you ever happen to be in Cordoba, get one. Because if you are heading further south, you may suffer for a while.

I was pretty excited to find an American pale ale. Son Cerveza Artesana is also located in Cordoba.
