The 2017 Japanese Odyssey kicks off this weekend. To commemorate, our latest Rider’s Lens features Eigo Shimojo and his collection of 21 rider portraits from last years Japanese Odyssey. Enjoy…

The Japanese Odyssey is a group ride that starts in Tokyo and covers roughly 3,200 kilometers (1,988 miles) across rural Japan. It is a challenge in that it must be completed in 13 days. Last year at the first annual running of the event, photographer Eigo Shimojo captured this incredible portrait series of 21 participants. Here is each one with names and nationalities. If I’m following this correctly, they had 21 riders photographed for the 2016 event, but just 13 this year? That’s too bad. Looks like a very different adventure that your typical bikepacking event. Let’s hope for more riders in 2018.
