Thanks in advance for spreading the word!

Last month, Jeanne Lepoix and Xavier Tipa completed the La Ruta Mala bikepacking route across Cuba in 17 days. Along the way, they made this beautiful video that captures the magic of the country, its people, and their experience…

Sometimes, it’s hard to properly capture the full experience of a bike trip through photography alone. This may be especially true when it comes to the culture, warmth, and richness you might experience while crossing Cuba via La Ruta Mala, “the bad way.” However, with a skillful eye and a steady hand, Jeanne Lepoix (@jeannelepoix) and Xavier Tipa (@xaviertipa) did a wonderful job of capturing this magical route in all its splendor. Watch the video below, find a few stills, and scroll down to learn more about the route…

Cuba's La Ruta Mala Bikepacking RouteCuba’s La Ruta Mala bikepacking route starts at the eastern coastal city of Santiago de Cuba and crosses three mountain ranges starting with the Sierra Maestra. The 860 mile (1,384km) route passes through farming communities, two more mountain ranges, jungles, and coastal fishing villages, before entering the far west limestone karst menagerie of the Valle de Viñales. La Ruta Mala is the key to discovering a beautiful time-locked country that’s full of warm people, quirky eccentricities, natural beauty, and history that’s always at the surface. The name of the route — ‘La Ruta Mala’, or ‘the bad way’ — represents the helpful Cubans’ penchant for telling us we were going the wrong way, or the bad way. There were multiple daily instances during our scouting mission where they insisted on giving us directions to a main road. We always smiled and told them that we prefer the bad way. Learn more here.
