Months after first teasing them online, Scott Felter and the team at Porcelain Rocket have finally launched their latest innovative product, the Microwave Panniers. The idea spawned from a desire to have an ultra rugged, fully waterproof pannier that would perform well while mountain biking on rough terrain (read: no rattling or bouncing around). In considering exactly what they’d need to make that work as simply and effectively as possible, they came up with a clever two-piece design. It incorporates a burly holster with an HDPE back plate that can be secured to virtually any rack using Voilé Straps, paired with an ultralight drybag that sits inside. Folks who know the brand might find it helpful to think of these as a Mr. Fusion (their popular modular seat pack system) inspired take on the classic pannier.
They’ve been testing various prototypes of the Microwave Panniers on various bikes and racks throughout the winter and spring, and they realized that these make for super practical commuter panniers as well. Beyond the Microwave Panniers’ intended purpose of expedition touring, using the empty holster to haul groceries, a lock, or extra layers works great, too.
